Skype recruiting Xbox developers for 'next generation services'

ImageA llsting on Microsoft's job site reveals that it's looking develop Skype products for the Xbox. The company has kept pretty quiet on its plans for integrating its Skype purchase into its various hardware pockets. While a beta for Windows Phone continues to tick along, this is the first salient sign that Skype and Xbox are looking to team-up. According to the listing: "As a member of the Skype Xbox Engineering Team in London, you will have a strong technical background developing client and/or embedded software." On top of those recent vacancies for browser-based Skype engineers, it's no stretch to see Skype bringing its telephony skills and heavily integrating them into Xbox Live, also giving the internet phone group a huge inroad to people's living rooms. However, the job ad doesn't clarify whether the result will be a simple stand-alone Skype client or something with a little more spice. We'll have to wait for some successful applicants.

'Prometheus,' Hologram Tupac Proof-Positive Of Nerd-tastic Future

On this week's 'Talk Nerdy,' are the new 'Prometheus' viral video and Tupac's Coachella hologram proof that the future has arrived?
By Josh Wigler

The future is now — just ask Tupac or Michael Fassbender.

Earlier in the week, nerd culture scored two big victories: one, the arrival of Hologram Tupac, who performed from beyond the grave at the Coachella music festival. Shortly thereafter came the announcement of David-8, a new line of androids from Weyland Industries set to launch on the upcoming "Prometheus" voyage.

Frankly, both sound like ridiculous sci-fi concepts that could only occur in the far-off future. But one of those things actually happened. Even if you're not a hip-hop fan, the fact that a walking, talking, swear-slinging Tupac Shakur appeared before Coachella attendees for nearly five full minutes 16 years after his death should illicit an avalanche of geek-gasms. It certainly did for "Talk Nerdy" co-host Eric Ditzian.

"Holo-pac is the beginning of something very new," Ditzian said in Splash Page's latest Hero of the Week column. "It's a sci-fi nerd's dream come true, in a sense — a game-changing technology no longer part of a fictional realm but in our own."

He's right, of course. For years, we've watched men, women and aliens alike appear via holographic image on the bridge of the USS Enterprise, as an urgent message issued through the eternally adorable R2-D2 and so on. Messages from fully formed individuals based in another place, perhaps even in another time, coming our heroes' way through the inexplicable powers of science fiction. None of that was real, of course, because let's be serious: Did we ever expect to see these kinds of things happen anywhere other than in Space, the Final Frontier or in the land of a Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Away? I certainly didn't.

Tupac — with a little help from Dr. Dre and friends — proved me wrong.

But it says a lot that even with the newfound discovery of Holo-Pac, I remain equally obsessed, if not more so, with "Prometheus." Ridley Scott's first science-fiction film since 1982's "Blade Runner" is easily my most anticipated film of 2012. That says a lot, considering this is the same year that sees Earth's mightiest heroes together onscreen for the first time, the same year that Bane might break the Bat on behalf of Christopher Nolan. The first two "Alien" films are permanent fixtures in my otherwise evolving list of all-time favorite movies, but it wasn't until I saw the David-8 advertisement — a viral video that sees Michael Fassbender's cybernetic character explain his own capabilities and uses as a robot, eerie and fascinating and beautiful in every sense of those words — coupled with Tupac's digital return, that I realized why I'm so excited for "Prometheus."

Maybe it's the power of a good Guy Pearce speech. Or maybe I've just binged on one too many geek movies in my day. But I look at the list of achievements accomplished by Pearce's "Prometheus" character — Sir Peter Weyland, a pioneer in many fields including terraforming and robotics — and I can't stop thinking that maybe, just maybe, we're not so far off from having a Broca Dialectical Implant (the first language tool that requires absolutely no learning on the user's part) or developing faster-than-light space exploration vehicles.

No, at the moment, there are no functional hoverboards as promised by the movies, and the Nike Air McFlys do not yet lace themselves up without assistance. And maybe we'll have to wait a bit longer than 70 years to meet an android with the same emotional depth as David. But right now, we do have a long-deceased music legend performing from beyond the grave via hologram. If we brought Tupac back in 2012, then what can't we accomplish by 2073?

It's not a robot ... but we're getting pretty damn close.

Intel reports $12.9 billion in revenue for Q1 of 2012, breaks no records

Intel reports $12.9 billion in revenue for Q1 2012, breaks no recordsWhile it's hard to get upset when your company is raking in just shy of $13 billion over just three months, we're sure Intel's investors are a little sad to see revenue drop across all business divisions. With a net income of $2.7 billion, profits dropped nearly 19 percent from last quarter and everyone from the data center group to the PC client group saw revenues fall by significant margins. There's no reason to worry about Chipzilla, though. The company's seemingly constant record smashing quarters had to come to an end sometime and we're sure with its entrance into the smartphone market this year new streams of revenue will start pouring in shortly. Check out the source link for all the financial nitty gritty.

Snakehead bounty: Maryland offers $200 gift card

Snakehead bounty: For every angler that catches and kills a snakehead fish in Maryland, the state is offering a $200 gift card "bounty" plus other incentives.

The second annual Maryland state bounty on snakeheads is sure to boost the media hype around this Asian invasive species.

Coming to a website near you: "Frankenfish" or "Fishzilla" or "The Fish That Ate Maryland."

Maybe that should be the next Maryland contest: Another Fearsome Nom de Mar for the Channidae family fish, that is believed to have originated in northern India some 50 million years ago.

No doubt, the concern over the snakehead species is justified. Already, the fish can found in at least eight US states. It's not just the fierce teeth, or that it can actually exist out of water, breathing air via a suprabranchial organ, for up to four days. The real threat is that it is a "top-level predator." In other words, it has no natural predators in the US.

The major concern is that it may replace the largemouth bass in Maryland and Virginia waters. In 2004, snakeheads were first spotted in the Potomac River. Since then, they've multiplied, and gotten bigger.

A study by Maryland's Department of Natural Resources and the state's Fish and Wildlife Department concluded that largemouth bass and snakeheads are battling it out for survival. The study found that the two species would eat each other's offspring, live in shallow water beneath protective lilies and grass and chase frog baits. The study also found that when snakehead populations declined, largemouth bass populations grew.

Last year, 69 fishermen entered the snakehead bounty contest, killing 82. Given that a single female snakehead can spawn 15,000 eggs at once, and typically mates five times a year, the contest isn't likely to put a huge dent in the snakehead population.

?We don?t expect that anglers will eradicate the snakehead population,? said Joe Love, DNR Tidal Bass program manager. ?We do believe this promotion and inspiration of anglers can help control the snakehead population. The information we gain from the Angler?s Log reports are also helpful in assessing the abundance, spread and impact of these feisty fish.?

This year's Maryland bounty includes a $200 gift card to Bass Pro Shops at Arundel Mills, a Maryland State Passport, which provides unlimited day-use entry for up to ten passengers in a vehicle, unlimited boat launching at State Park facilities and a 10 percent discount on State-operated concessions and boat rentals, or a Potomac River Fisheries Commission fishing license. The winner will be randomly drawn on November 30, 2012.

To enter, anglers must submit catch details and a photo of their dead snakehead online through the DNR Angler?s log, a fishing site.

Not sure if your catch is really a snakehead? Check out the Maryland state video on how to spot a snakehead ? or Fishzilla.

Too Cold For Coachella? Watch Couchella On YouTube

Screen Shot 2012-04-14 at 12.05.43 PMIt is freaking cold here in Indio California, so cold that half of the folks in the house I'm staying with for the weekend left the Coachella music festival last night around 9pm. Even though I stayed until midnight (made it to Swedish House Mafia, yesss!), I ended up buying an ugly $60 Coachella hoodie to not freeze my buns off. A LOT of people now own this hoodie, I think we should totally pass it on to our kids. In lieu of watching Coachella live, my de facto PGA Villa roommates -- who have paid hundreds of dollars for their VIP tickets -- have been instead addicted to the livestream on YouTube, sitting in front of our fireplace at home. Brave New Musical Festival world we live in. This is actually the second year that YouTube has livestreamed the festival, and as I attest to above people, like normal people, are watching it.

Mozilla tests out opt-in system for plug-ins in latest Firefox nightly build

Image
Plug-ins bogging down your web browsing? Then it looks like you could soon have another option to cut through the clutter right in Firefox. The latest nightly build of the browser includes a new feature that lets users turn off all plug-ins by default and then click on each to enable them (something that, we should note, can already be done through third-party add-ons). While that functionality is still in the early stages, Mozilla's Jared Wein says that they're now working on adding the ability to remember plug-in settings on a per-site basis, and hope to have the feature ready for the release version of Firefox 14 (currently due out in July). In the meantime, you can get an early look at the feature in the latest nightly build available at the source link below.

Stocks rebound after Tuesday's big slide

The Dow jumped 89 points to close at 12805, a stark turnaround from yesterday's free-fall.

Investors on Wednesday all but forgot the previous day's burdens and sent stocks soaring. It was a stark turnaround from the day before, when they'd pushed the market into a free-fall on worries about European debt and corporate earnings in the U.S.

Those fears about problems festering on both sides of the Atlantic were calmed thanks to a surprising profit from Alcoa and news that borrowing costs in Spain had edged down, a potential sign that investors have more faith ? for now, anyway ? in that country's financial health.

The result was a U-turn on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed as much as 129 points in early trading before settling at 12,805.39, up 89.46 points. The previous day, it had lost 214 points, the cap to its biggest and longest losing streak this year.

European markets rose, too. Stocks climbed roughly 1 percent in major capitals, excluding Greece, after losing 2 to 3 percent the day before. Treasury prices fell, signaling that investors are more willing to put money in stocks.

Other U.S. indexes also erased much of the previous day's losses. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 10.12 points to 1,368.71 after losing 24 points the day before. The Nasdaq composite climbed 25.24 points to 3,016.46 following a 56-point loss Tuesday.

Alcoa rose more than 6 percent after reporting late Tuesday that it turned a profit in the first three months of the year and handily beat the expectations of Wall Street analysts, who were predicting a loss. Since Alcoa is the first company in the Dow average to report earnings, its results have a greater ability to move the market compared with companies that report later. More first-quarter results will be released over the next few weeks.

Market watchers were divided over how long the gains would last and whether Alcoa's profits actually mean anything for the rest of the earnings season.

"I'm not predicting we're going to have a blowout earnings quarter," said David Armstrong, managing director of Monument Wealth Management in Alexandria, Virginia. "But I think if people thought earnings season was going to be bad, they may be pleasantly surprised."

"One earnings report?" countered Uri Landesman, president of the New York hedge fund Platinum Partners. The boost "will last until the first bad number."

Among stocks making big moves:

?Titan Machinery, which sells agricultural and construction equipment, jumped nearly 17 percent after reporting a big increase in quarterly profit.

?Cell phone maker Nokia plummeted nearly 16 percent after warning that heavy competition will hurt first-quarter results.
