When I got "the call" it was also 2 weeks before baby was born. I still didn't buy anything or allow a shower. I learned from people here on a.com that very little is actually needed right away. The hospital sweetpea was born in provided a lot of stuff. If you have a car seat you're okay. When Sweetpea left the hospital, my mom went and bought some clothes, diapers, bottles etc.
After TPR, ICPC, and all that fun stuff we were able to come home. Then someone held a "Meet Sweetpea" party for friends and family.
As a previous poster said, if I had to come home without Sweetpea it would have been really hard to look at baby things and wonder what to do with them.
Having a shower after baby is home and TPR has happened is the way to go IMHO. It not only protects you in case the adoption doesn't happen it also gives friends and family a chance to meet baby.
