iPhone 5 sales surge in China: Apple bites back at Samsung

Apple has announced that it has sold over two million of its new iPhone 5 in China, within three days after its launch on December 14.

That makes it more than 2,000,000 devices in 72 hours, or about 666,666 a day ? simple mathematics, and whoosh, Apple?s selling about 463 iPhone 5 devices every minute.

That?s still less than the 5,000,000 iPhone 5 devices that Apple sold during the first weekend launch in September ? but that was in nine countries, including the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK.

To top it, the recent Chinese statistics come about three months after the global launch of Apple?s hottest selling smartphone ? which means that many of China?s eager beavers (early adopters) would have already sourced their iPhones from elsewhere on the planet.

?Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO.

?China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.?

We bet China is a very important market for you, Tim. More important than the US, it seems, if the stats you?ve released are anything to go by.

Apple has said that the iPhone 5 will be available in more than 100 countries by the end of December, making it the fastest iPhone rollout ever.

The phone has been officially available in the UAE since December 14 although Apple is yet to release the sales numbers for us ? it?ll be fair to assume that UAE numbers will perhaps be a fair bit short of the Chinese uptake even though the mobile phone penetration (the number of phones each if us own) in Dubai and the rest of the UAE is up among the highest in the world.
