Duke still a runaway No. 1 in AP Top 25

For the third straight week Duke is the runaway No. 1 in The Associated Press' Top 25, and for the first time in 16 years Minnesota is in the top 10.

The Blue Devils (12-0) received all but two first-place votes from the 65-member media panel on Monday. The next five teams ? Michigan, Arizona, Louisville, Indiana and Kansas ? held their places from last week. Syracuse, Ohio State, Minnesota and Gonzaga rounded out the top 10.

Michigan (13-0) was No. 1 on two ballots for the second straight week. Minnesota is in the top 10 for the first time since it was third in the final poll of 1996-97.

New Mexico, which won at undefeated Cincinnati, returns to the rankings at No. 20 after being out for one week. The Lobos replace UNLV, which dropped out from 20th after losing at North Carolina.

Report an error

UFA, Russia ? Goaltending? Check.

A short bench? No big deal.

Discipline? Not really an issue.

The factors that might have been problems for Canada in its game against the United States at the 2013 World Junior Championship didn?t materialize.

Instead, goalie Malcolm Subban, who had allowed six goals in Canada?s first two games of the tournament, was nearly perfect in a 2-1 victory.

Canada played the game without a pair of suspended forwards. JC Lipon served his one-game suspension, while Boone Jenner?s three-gamer is done as well. Both will be in the lineup when Canada and Russia meet on New Year?s Eve in the final preliminary-round game for both teams. The winner will earn a bye the semifinals on Thursday.

But there was not much off the pace of the Canadian forwards, who didn?t perform like they were one man short.

Captain Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome scored for Canada.

With Strome in the penalty box, Jacob Trouba scored for the U.S. in the third period on a power play.

Nugent-Hopkins, who leads the tournament with eight points, scored on a wrist shot in the first period after Mark Scheifele won a faceoff in the U.S. end. Canada gained control and Jonathan Huberdeau made a pass off the side boards to Nugent-Hopkins, whose wrist shot cleanly beat American goalie John Gibson to the stick side.

Strome made it 2-0 at 14:44 when he flipped a pass from Niagara IceDogs linemate Brett Ritchie behind Gibson. U.S. defenceman Seth Jones, a potential No. 1 pick in the 2013 NHL entry draft, had no idea Strome was in front of the net when Ritchie made the pass.

Subban?s biggest save came on a breakaway by U.S. forward John Gaudreau in the first period with Canada up 1-0. Gaudreau deked to his backhand and tried to slip the puck between Subban?s legs, but the netminder simultaneously slid across the crease and closed the five hole.

But Subban was sharp throughout the game. He settled into a groove with a pair of tough stops on Vince Trocheck in the first few minutes, demonstrating to fans at the rink and across Canada that he was capable of taking his game to a higher level.

In the second period, Subban stopped a close-range chance by J.T. Miller and then saved an Alex Galchenyuk shot from the slot.

And there was Subban lunging across the crease to deny Ryan Hartman not long after Trouba scored to preserve the one-goal lead.

Canada had to kill off its share of penalties ? Mark McNeill and Phillip Danault were excellent ? but nothing came close to being a suspension. The pair was instrumental in killing off a four-minute minor to Griffin Reinhart in the second period.

Nugent-Hopkins was sent off for boarding with just under two minutes to play, but the U.S. could not score. Subban stopped Galchenyuk, among other saves.

Subban and Gibson were named the MVPs of the game for their respective teams.

Reports: Eagles to let go of Reid as coach

Updated: December 30, 2012, 10:51 PM ET

ESPN.com news services

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Andy Reid is out after 14 years coaching the Philadelphia Eagles, three people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press following Sunday's 42-7 season-ending loss to the New York Giants.

Reid Is Eagles' Best

Andy Reid is the winningest coach in Eagles franchise history. Since Reid's arrival in Philadelphia in 1999, the Eagles have recorded 130 regular-season wins, the NFL's sixth-highest total in that span. Philadelphia also had 10 postseason wins, the third-most since 1999, and claimed six division titles, also the third-most, under Reid.

-- ESPN Stats & Information

CSNPhilly.com earlier reported that Reid would be out as coach.

Reid and team owner Jeffrey Lurie are scheduled to meet Monday, and a team official insisted to ESPN that Reid has yet to be informed that he will be fired.

Another Eagles source told ESPN that Lurie and Reid met Friday, but the Eagles' owner did not inform him at that time that he would be let go.

"I go in eyes wide open," Reid said after Sunday's loss dropped the Eagles to a 4-12 season. "Either way, I understand. Whatever he chooses will be the right thing. He always does things for the best interests of the Eagles."

Asked if he wants to return in 2013, Reid said: "I'm all in."

Reid is due to make $6 million in 2013 in the final year of his contract. He said he wants to coach next year, but it's possible Lurie could persuade him to take a year off and perhaps help out in the front office in an "advisory" role.

Eagles spokesman Derek Boyko denied several reports that Lurie has already fired Reid, saying it's "absolutely, 100 percent" untrue.

Sources told ESPN that Reid is preparing to coach elsewhere next season in case he is no longer with the Eagles.

SportsNation: How many firings Monday?

SportsNation How many coaches will be fired on "Black Monday?"
? Rank 'Em!

He has been calling around the league, trying to put together a coaching staff, so that if and when he is let go in Philadelphia, he will be ready to resume coaching for another franchise next season.

Some around the league have wondered whether Reid would be a fit back in California, where he grew up, but the San Diego Chargers are planning to go in other directions than Reid, according to league sources.

Although he is not expected to be a candidate with the Chargers, Reid could wind up as a candidate in Jacksonville if the Jaguars fire Mike Mularkey or in Arizona if the Cardinals part ways with coach Ken Whisenhunt.

The 54-year-old Reid, who was hired to coach the Eagles in 1999, is 130-93-1 in 14 seasons with the franchise.

Under Reid, the Eagles have made nine playoff appearances, won six division titles, played in five NFC Championship Games and lost one Super Bowl.

After Sunday's game, players said they expect changes, but continued to support Reid.

"He's a great man and I love him to death," said quarterback Michael Vick, who could've played his last game with the Eagles. "I wish I could've done more. A lot of players wish they could've done more. Coaches can't play the games."

Attackers in India rape case to face murder charge

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Indian police charged six men with murder on Saturday, adding to accusations that they beat and gang-raped a woman on a New Delhi bus nearly two weeks ago in a case that shocked the country.

The murder charges were laid after the woman died earlier Saturday in a Singapore hospital where she has been flown for treatment.

New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said the six face the death penalty if convicted, in case that has triggered protests across India for greater protection for women from sexual violence, and raised questions about lax attitudes by police toward sexual crimes.

The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from reporting it to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from those who are courageous enough to report the rapes, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts drag on for years.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred, adding it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman's death will not have been in vain.

The victim "passed away peacefully" early Saturday at Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore with her family and officials of the Indian Embassy by her side, Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of the hospital, said in a statement.

After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the Indian capital, the woman was brought Thursday to Mount Elizabeth, which specializes in multi-organ transplants. Loh said the woman had been in extremely critical condition since Thursday, and by late Friday her condition had taken a turn for the worse, with her vital signs deteriorating.

"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," Loh said.

The woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were on a bus in New Delhi after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman's body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

As news of the victim's death reached New Delhi, hundreds of policemen sealed off the high-security India Gate area, where the seat of India's government is located, in anticipation of more protests.

The area is home to the president's palace, the prime minister's office and key defense, external affairs and home ministries, and has been the scene of battles between protesters and police for days after the attack.

Police were allowing people to assemble at the Jantar Mantar and Ramlila grounds, the main areas allotted for protests in New Delhi, Bhagat said.

Mourners gathered at Jantar Mantar to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment. Women face daily harassment across India, ranging from catcalls on the streets, groping and touching in public transport to rape.

They put a wreath studded with white flowers on the road, lit a candle and sat around it in a silent tribute to the young woman. Members of a theatre group nearby played small tambourine and sang songs urging the society to wake up and end discrimination against women.

Dipali, a working woman who uses one name, said the rape victim deserved justice. "I hope it never happens again to any girl," she said.

Dozens of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi marched silently to the bus stop from where the rape victim and her friend had boarded the bus on Dec. 16. They carried placards reading "She is not with us but her story must awaken us."

Sonia Gandhi, the governing Congress party chief, assured the protesters in a statement that the rape victim's death "deepens our determination to battle the pervasive, the shameful social attitudes and mindset that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such an impunity."

The protesters heckled Sheila Dikshit, the top elected leader of New Delhi state, when she came to express her sympathy with them and forced her to leave the protest venue. They blamed her for the deteriorating law and order situation in the Indian capital.

Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said the woman's death was a sobering reminder of the widespread sexual violence in India.

"The outrage now should lead to law reform that criminalizes all forms of sexual assault, strengthens mechanisms for implementation and accountability, so that the victims are not blamed and humiliated," Ganguly said.

Prime Minister Singh said he understood the angry reaction to the attack and that he hoped all Indians would work together to make appropriate changes.

"These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change," Singh said in a statement Saturday. "It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action."

Mamta Sharma, head of the state-run National Commission for Women, said the "time has come for strict laws" to stop violence against women. "The society has to change its mindset to end crimes against women," she said.

Indian attitudes toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen provocative.

Separately, authorities in Punjab state took action Thursday when an 18-year-old woman killed herself by drinking poison a month after she told police she was gang-raped.

State authorities suspended one police officer and fired two others on accusations they delayed investigating and taking action in the case. The three accused in the rape were arrested only on Thursday night, a month after the crime was reported.

"This is a very sensitive crime, I have taken it very seriously," said Paramjit Singh Gill, a top police officer in the city of Patiala.

The Press Trust of India reported that the woman was raped Nov. 13 and reported the attack to police Nov. 27. But police harassed the girl, asked her embarrassing questions and took no action against the accused, PTI reported, citing police sources.

DHA to regulate services provided through health insurance | Dubai ...

This will be done through the implementation of a regulatory framework as well as electronic insurance claims, aiming to further improve the quality of services provided in Dubai and insure that nationals and residents are protected in a sustainable health system.

Registration of insurance providers:
Dr Haidar Al Yousuf, Director of Health Funding for the DHA, said, "This means that all insurance companies will be registered by the authority and that the authority will take on an inspectional role to ensure all providers are following protocols to provide best insurance services to their customers."

Insurance policy holders' will have a channel to lodge their feedback, suggestions and complaints. Regulating health insurance policies also means that the DHA will ensure that the policy holder's are getting insurance for all the services they are entitled to as per their policy.

E-claims system to lodge all health claims electronically:
Moreover, every health insurance claim in the Emirate of Dubai, will be lodged online through the e-claims portal which is already in place. The portal will provide a complete break-down of the insurance claims which is a significant leap for the health sector in Dubai.

This means that, we will be able to get a detailed range of gold-standard data such as break-up of claims according to health specialties in the Emirate of Dubai. E.g: No of people who visited the practitioner for cardiac problems, diabetes etc in 2013.

This information will help the DHA study healthcare pattern which in the long run, is a process that will substantially aid in setting public health policies and strategies to ensure better health for the population of Dubai."

Regulating the services provided by insurance companies is an essential stage within the universal coverage mandate as highlighted by the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015, as envisioned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The authority will also regulate price increases by private providers as well as insurance premiums based on inflation parameters and best practice models in health insurance, the authority's role will ensure establishing the correct balance to drive further investment to the health sector and the ensure long-term sustainability of health services without any parties making exaggerated profits that could be damaging to beneficiaries, employers and the economy.

Dr Al Yousuf elaborated that health insurance is a dynamic growing sector with close to 40 insurance companies and many self insured schemes providing health insurance coverage to around one million members in Dubai and that regulating and monitoring this sector is fundamental to protect members, limit attempts of abuse and further enhance the quality and sustainability of health services in the Emirate.

He announced that the DHA Director-General has instructed to expedite the role out of the framework to be functional within the first quarter of 2013.

Four killed when Russian airliner crash lands

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian airliner flying without passengers broke into pieces after it slid off the runway and crashed onto a highway outside Moscow upon landing on Saturday, killing four of the eight crew on board and leaving smoking chunks of fuselage on the icy road.

The crash during peak holiday travel ahead of Russia's New Year's vacation, which runs from Sunday through January 9, cast a spotlight on the country's poor air-safety record despite President Vladimir Putin's calls to improve controls.

Television footage showed the Tupolev Tu-204 jet with smoke billowing from the tail end and the cockpit broken clean off the front.

Some witnesses told state channel Rossiya-24 they saw a man thrown from the plane as it rammed into the barrier of the highway outside Vnukovo airport, just southwest of the capital, and another described pulling other people from the wreckage.

"The plane split into three pieces," Yelena Krylova, chief spokeswoman for the airport, said in televised comments.

Police spokesman Gennady Bogachyov said: "The plane went off the runway, broke through the barrier and caught fire."

The pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and a flight attendant were killed and the other four crew members aboard - all flight attendants - were in a serious condition in hospital with head injuries, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Officials had earlier said there were 12 crew aboard.

The mid-range Tu-204 was operated by the Russian airline Red Wings and travelling from the Czech Republic, Krylova said.

WARNING

Wreckage from the crash was scattered across the highway and the plane's wings were torn from the fuselage, witnesses said.

"We saw how the plane skidded off the runway ... The nose, where business class is, broke off and a man fell out," a witness, who gave his name as Alexei, said. "We helped him get into a mini-bus to take him to the hospital."

Another witness described pulling four people from the wreckage when he arrived at the scene before emergency service workers. "We could not get the pilot out of the cockpit but we saw a lot of blood," he told Rossiya-24.

Russian investigators said preliminary findings pointed to pilot error as the cause of the crash.

But Russia's aviation authority said it had sent state-owned Tupolev a warning on Saturday ordering it to fix problems that may have caused a Tu-204 with 70 aboard to go off a Siberian runway on December 21 after suffering engine and brake trouble on landing. It said similar problems had occurred before.

The billionaire owner of Red Wings, tycoon Alexander Lebedev, said on Twitter that the Tu-204 in Saturday's crash was built in 2008. He offered condolences to the victims' families and promised financial compensation and other aid.

Red Wings' website said it operated nine Tu-204 aircraft.

Russia and other former Soviet republics had some of the world's worst air-traffic safety records last year, with a total accident rate almost three times the world average, the International Air Transport Association said.

A passenger jet crashed and burst into flames after takeoff in Siberia in April, killing 31 people, and an airliner slammed into a riverbank in September 2011, wiping out the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team in a crash that killed 44 people.

The Russian-built Tu-204, which is comparable in size to a Boeing 757 or Airbus A321, is a Soviet-era design that was produced in the mid-1990s but is no longer being made. There have been no major accidents reported involving Tu-204s.

Hear Better At Work After A Hearing Test - rukikilucaba's ...

When you have a hearing test, you may learn that there is the potential for you to lose some or all of your ability to hear. You may be worried about what this will mean for you. There is no doubt that workplace noise levels are often one of the key problems affecting those who have hearing issues. Yet, there is something you can do about it. You can take steps to prevent the problem from getting worse. To do so, you simply need to realize what is causing the problem. Then, you must minimize the risk. Most employers are happy to work with you, because your suggestion may improve everyone?s working conditions.

Protecting Your Ears

One of the most important things you can do, even before you have a hearing test, is protect your ears from harsh noises. Noise is any sound that is above the healthy sound levels. The loudest healthy sounds are about as loud as a washing machine. Sounds louder than that can begin to cause damage to the inner ear, especially if they are heard for long periods of time. Additionally, very loud sounds, like the sound of a hand drill or the sound of a gunshot can cause damage must faster or with just one exposure.

To protect against this type of sound, wear earplugs when you are at work. These will block out some of the sounds you hear. Most of the loud sounds will be more acceptable when you have these devices in place. Your employer may even have to provide these to you, according to OSHA standards. If not, ask about them.

Minimize Exposure

Another step you can take to prevent further damage to your inner ear is to minimize your exposure to loud noises. If your hearing test revealed even minimal loss, doing this now can help to prevent the situation from getting worse. Minimize the length of time you are exposed to any noise. You may want to take a long break from duties that require you to be in loud situations. You should also avoid exposure to loud sounds for good.

By doing these things, you can prevent losing your hearing to any further extent. For many people, a hearing test can be an awakening. It can show them exactly what is happening. If your workplace is the problem for you, talk to your doctor about it. Find out what steps you can take to improve your situation.

Have a Sacramento, CA hearing testwhen you are concerned with how noise exposure is affecting you. For more information about preventative measures for hearing loss, please read the following: http://www.miracle-ear-sacramento.com.

Harry Carey Jr. dies at 91; character actor in John Ford films

Harry Carey Jr., a venerable character actor who was believed to be the last surviving member of director John Ford's legendary western stock company, died Thursday. He was 91.

Carey, whose career spanned more than 50 years and included such Ford classics as "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "The Searchers," died of natural causes in Santa Barbara, said Melinda Carey, a daughter.

"In recent years, he became kind of the living historian of the modern era," film critic Leonard Maltin told The Times on Friday. "He would get hired on films by young directors who just wanted to work with him, to be one step away from the legends. Some hired him to just hear his stories between takes."

Director Joe Dante, who used Carey in his 1984 comic-fantasy "Gremlins," told The Times in 2003: "You got a lot of free movie history when you cast him."

The son of silent-film western star Harry Carey Sr. and his actress wife, Olive, Carey made more than 100 films. They included "Red River," "Beneath the 12-Mile Reef," "Big Jake," "Cahill U.S. Marshal," "The Long Riders," "The Whales of August" and 1993's "Tombstone."

The boyishly handsome Carey lacked the screen-dominating star quality of his longtime pal and frequent co-star, John Wayne. Instead, Carey brought a rare authenticity to his westerns as one of Hollywood's best horsemen.

That was amply illustrated in 1950's "Rio Grande," for which he and cowboy-turned-character actor Ben Johnson learned to ride two horses while standing up, with one foot on the back of each horse.

His other films with Ford include "3 Godfathers," "Wagon Master," "The Long Gray Line," "Mister Roberts," "Two Rode Together" and "Cheyenne Autumn."

Carey also appeared in dozens of television shows, most of them westerns, and portrayed the boys' ranch counselor in the popular 1950s "Spin and Marty" serials on "The Mickey Mouse Club."

According to Dante, Carey was at his best in Ford's 1950 western "Wagon Master," in which Carey and Johnson co-starred as horse traders who join a Mormon wagon train.

"Harry was a straight-arrow, realistic person on the screen," Dante said. "It didn't seem like he was acting. He really had an aw-shucks quality."

He was born Henry George Carey on May 16, 1921, on his father's ranch north of Saugus and a 45-minute drive from Universal Studios, where Harry Sr. made westerns in the 1910s and 1920s. More than two dozen were directed by John Ford, who became a close family friend.

When Carey was born, his father, Ford and then-New York City Mayor Jimmy Walker awaited the baby's arrival by drinking a whiskey named Melwood.

From then on, as Carey wrote in his 1994 memoir, "Company of Heroes: My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company": "Every time Ford saw me with my father he'd say, 'Mellllwood ? li'llll Mellllwood,' alluding to how drunk he and my dad were that night."

The young Carey graduated from Black-Foxe Military Institute in Hollywood in the late 1930s, studied voice and made his stage debut, with his father, in summer stock in Maine.

During World War II he served in the Navy in the Pacific theater, then worked in Washington on Navy training and propaganda films for Ford, at that time a naval officer.

In 1944, Carey married Marilyn Fix, daughter of character actor Paul Fix.

After the war, Carey attempted a singing career but turned to film with a small role as a cowboy in the 1946 movie "Rolling Home."

"When he went into the movies, everybody suggested he go by Harry Carey Jr., but I think he regretted that forever," his daughter said. "He just wanted to be Dobe, the nickname he always went by," and which his father gave him because his red hair matched the ranch house's adobe bricks.

John Wayne recommended the fledgling actor for the role of a cowboy who dies in a cattle stampede in the 1948 Howard Hawks' classic "Red River." Shot in 1947, it also featured the elder Carey in his final role. He died the same year at 69.

When Ford made "3 Godfathers," he cast Harry Jr. in a leading role as the Abilene Kid and dedicated the 1948 film to Harry Sr. The film's three desperadoes ? played by Wayne, Pedro Armendariz and Carey ? risk their lives in the desert to save a baby.

Before filming in Death Valley, Ford ? who was well-known for his sadistic behavior toward actors in his films ? told Carey: "You're going to hate me when this picture is over, but you're going to give a great performance."

After the first take of Carey's death scene, filmed in scorching heat, Ford cussed him out and left the actor to bake in the sun for 30 minutes. When the director returned, a near-delirious Carey delivered his death speech, his mouth so dry he couldn't swallow and with a voice that resembled the croaking of a dying man.

"Why didn't you do that the first time?" a grinning Ford told Carey. "See how easy it was? You done good! That's a wrap!"

Carey is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters Melinda and Lily; son Tom; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Early cognitive problems documented among those who eventually get Alzheimer's

Dec. 28, 2012 ? People who study or treat Alzheimer's disease and its earliest clinical stage, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), have focused attention on the obvious short-term memory problems. But a new study suggests that people on the road to Alzheimer's may actually have problems early on in processing semantic or knowledge-based information, which could have much broader implications for how patients function in their lives.

Terry Goldberg, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and director of neurocognition at the Litwin Zucker Center for Research in Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, NY, said that clinicians have observed other types of cognitive problems in MCI patients but no one had ever studied it in a systematic way. Many experts had noted individuals who seemed perplexed by even the simplest task. In this latest study, published in this month's issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry, investigators used a clever series of tests to measure a person's ability to process semantic information.

Do people with MCI have trouble accessing different types of knowledge? Are there obvious semantic impairments that have not been picked up before? The answer was "yes."

In setting out to test the semantic processing system, Dr. Goldberg and his colleagues needed a task that did not involve a verbal response. That would only confuse things and make it harder to interpret the results. They decided to use size to test a person's ability to use semantic information to make judgments between two competing sets of facts. "If you ask someone what is bigger, a key or an ant, they would be slower in their response than if you asked them what is bigger, a key or a house," explained Dr. Goldberg. The greater the difference in size between two objects, the faster a person -- normal or otherwise -- can recognize the difference and react to the question.

Investigators brought in 25 patients with MCI, 27 patients with Alzheimer's and 70 cognitively fit people for testing. They found large differences between the healthy controls and the MCI and Alzheimer's patients. "This finding suggested that semantic processing was corrupted," said Dr. Goldberg. "MCI and AD (Alzheimer's disease) patients are really affected when they are asked to respond to a task with small size differences."

They then tweaked the task by showing pictures of a small ant and a big house or a big ant and a small house. This time, the MCI and AD patients did not have a problem with the first part of the test -- they were able to choose the house over the ant when asked what was bigger. But if the images were incongruent -- the big ant seemed just as big as the small house -- they were confused, they answered incorrectly or took longer to arrive at a response.

Patients with MCI were functioning somewhere between the healthy people and those with AD. "When the decision was harder, their reaction time was slower," he said.

Would this damaged semantic system have an effect on everyday functions? To answer this question, investigators turned to the UCSD Skills Performance Assessment scale, a tool that they have been using in MCI and AD patients that is generally used to identify functional deficits in patients with schizophrenia. The test taps a person's ability to write a complex check or organize a trip to the zoo on a cold day.

This is actually a good test for figure out whether someone has problems with semantic knowledge. Semantic processing has its seat in the left temporal lobe. "The semantic system is organized in networks that reflect different types of relatedness or association," the investigators wrote in their study. "Semantic items and knowledge have been acquired remotely, often over many repetitions, and do not reflect recent learning."

Dr. Goldberg said the finding is critically important because it may be possible to strengthen these semantic processing connections through training. "It tells us that something is slowing down the patient and it is not episodic memory but semantic memory," he said. They will continue to study these patients over time to see if these semantic problems get worse as the disease advances.

In an accompanying editorial, David P. Salmon, PhD, of the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California in San Diego, said that the "semantic memory deficit demonstrated by this study adds confidence to the growing perception that subtle decline in this cognitive domain occurs in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Because the task places minimal demands on the effortful retrieval process, overt word retrieval, or language production, it also suggests that this deficit reflects an early and gradual loss of integrity of semantic knowledge."

He added that a "second important aspect of this study is the demonstration that semantic memory decrements in patients with mild cognitive impairment may contribute to a decline in the ability to perform usual activities of daily living."

Seattle's Richard Sherman wins suspension appeal

RENTON, Wash. (AP) ? Even when others were suggesting he drop his case and accept his punishment, Richard Sherman never strayed from his steadfast belief that his four-game suspension would be overturned.

As unlikely as it seemed, Sherman was right.

The Seattle Seahawks will now have one of the best young cornerbacks in the NFL available for the playoffs after Sherman won his appeal of a suspension for use of performance enhancing substances on Thursday.

Gone is the lingering question about a possible suspension that hung over Sherman and the Seahawks for more than a month.

"I know what the truth is and anybody else who knows anything knows what the truth is. The truth has been told today," Sherman said on Thursday. "People can say what they want, there are always naysayers. I have great teammates and great coaches and great fans and that's all I care about."

The decision that was made by former NFL executive Bob Wallace came early Thursday morning. Sherman was called by his lawyer and simply announced in the Seahawks locker room, "I won."

High-fives ensued. Sherman took to Twitter and let his 40,000-plus followers know of his result.

A team already rolling on the field with four straight wins and an offensive output unmatched in the last half-decade of the NFL got even more good news.

"There was obviously a good amount of stress because you just don't know," Sherman said. "You know how strong your case is, how strong everything is, but it was just great to get it over with."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email the league is reviewing the decision, but was declining comment due to confidentiality provisions.

Sherman was steadfast since news broke of his pending suspension that he believed he would win on appeal. Sherman's appeal was based on errors in the chain of custody of his urine sample and that there were mistakes made by the tester.

His appeal took place late last week in St. Louis.

A copy of Wallace's decision was obtained by The Associated Press. In his explanation, Wallace writes that the collection process of Sherman's urine sample on Sept. 17, the day after Seattle beat Dallas in Week 2, was not ordinary.

According to the written decision, Sherman's sample cup began leaking, to which the tester grabbed another cup and transferred the sample. Documentation of the leaking cup was not originally on the submitted report following the test and only when asked by a supervisor in October did the tester acknowledge the sample being transferred from the original cup.

The tester later gave testimony that he'd never experienced a leaking cup before, yet didn't feel the situation rose to the level of needing to be included on his report.

Wallace wrote the omission of the leaking cup from the report was a "big deal," and that, "insuring a sample is collected properly is the cornerstone of the program and when an event occurs that does not happen routinely or that the collector has never experienced while collecting the sample it is incumbent upon that collector to note what happened."

"Accordingly, Mr. Sherman's appeal is granted and the discipline is reversed," Wallace wrote.

Sherman said when he got word on Nov. 12 of the failed test he knew it had to do with the sample collected in September.

"It was a weird day, a weird testing procedure," Sherman said. "A lot of things went wrong on that day and that's why the result came out the way it did because he made mistakes and he did things wrong."

Seattle has played the last three weeks without fellow starting cornerback Brandon Browner, serving a four-game suspension for a banned substance violation.

Browner's suspension expires after Sunday's game against the Rams, so Seattle will have both of its starting cornerbacks for the postseason.

"It definitely feels good for him to take this journey and keep being on this team with us," Seattle safety Earl Thomas said. "We're getting (Browner) back and the depth that we have and the young guys got a chance to prove who they are and it's all just coming together for us."

According to STATS, Sherman is tied with Pittsburgh's Keenan Lewis for the NFL lead with 23 passes defensed. He is tied for second in interceptions with seven.

Sherman was a surprise omission from the Pro Bowl roster announced Wednesday. Despite his impressive numbers, Sherman was a first alternate at cornerback for the NFC, behind the Chicago duo of Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman, and Arizona's Patrick Peterson.

"I appreciate the league for allowing justice to be served and allowing me to continue to play," Sherman said.

UPDATE 3-Cricket-Controversial former England captain Greig dies

(Adds quotes, details)

* Outstanding all-rounder and captain diagnosed with cancer

* Key figure in World Series Cricket revolution

MELBOURNE, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Former England captain Tony Greig, one of the architects of cricket's World Series revolution in the 1970s, has died at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack at his Sydney home on Saturday.

Greig, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, was taken to a Sydney hospital but died at about 1:45 pm (0245 GMT).

"The staff of the emergency department worked on Mr Greig to no avail," a spokesman at St Vincent's hospital told local media.

A larger-than-life figure standing 6ft 6in (1.98 metres), South Africa-born Greig was an outstanding all-rounder who played 58 tests for England from 1972-77, scoring 3,599 runs at 40.43 including eight centuries and claiming 141 wickets at 32.20 each. He was also a brilliant slip fielder, taking 87 catches in test matches.

Greig could bowl at either a lively medium-pace or, on occasion, employ quickish off-spin, using his height and bounce in the latter style to take 13 wickets and win a test match in the Caribbean.

But Greig and controversy were never far apart and on the same West Indies tour in 1974 he ran out Alvin Kallicharran while the batsman was walking back to the pavilion after the last ball of the day had been bowled.

Technically Kallicharran was out as the umpire had not yet indicated play had officially ended, but after spectators invaded the ground and threatened to riot, the batsman was recalled.

Later that year on the Ashes tour of Australia, Greig sometimes seemed to be playing the Australians on his own as Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson blitzed the hapless England batsmen with their pace, menace and bounce.

He was promoted to the captaincy in the following year after England lost the first Ashes test at home and immediately infused his own aggression and determination into the team who drew the next three tests against one of the strongest sides in history.

WEST INDIES OUTRAGED

However, in 1976 Greig attracted further unwanted controversy before a series against West Indies when he said he intended to make the tourists "grovel".

The use of the word by a white South African in a time of heightened racial tensions enraged the West Indies, whose fast bowlers noticeably lifted their pace when Greig arrived at the crease on their way to a 3-0 series victory.

Greig's biggest impact on the game came after he joined forces in 1977 with late Australian businessman Kerry Packer to set up the breakaway World Series Cricket (WSC) competition.

Media magnate Packer's concept, aimed at securing cricket broadcast rights for his Channel Nine in Australia, shook up the game's world order by pioneering limited overs matches played at night and turning cricketers into full-time professionals.

Greig's signature lent credibility to WSC and he played a key role in recruiting disaffected players to the controversial competition which lasted only two years but permanently changed the face of the game.

"He influenced all those guys from overseas, certainly, and the West Indies to join World Series Cricket and it was great for cricket what he had done," former Australia batsman Doug Walters, who played in the WSC competition, told Sky News.

"Greig was one of the great competitors of cricket...he was someone that really took the fight to Australia, but he took the fight to everybody.

"Win, lose or draw he was the first guy in our dressing room with a couple of beers in his hands."

COMBATIVE CHARACTER

Greig's recruitment to WSC's cause put him at loggerheads with cricket's conservative establishment and he was stripped of the England captaincy in 1977. His international career ended that year after he had made a typically whole-hearted contribution under Mike Brearley to England's Ashes success at home.

A long-time resident Down Under, Greig later became a cricket commentator with Channel Nine, having been promised a "job for life" by Packer.

A combative and occasionally abrasive character, Greig's booming voice and signature white hat featured on Australian television screens for over three decades, but his battle with cancer prevented him from taking his position behind the microphone for the current 2012/13 season.

"It's a great loss to world cricket. To me personally I'm shattered," said former Australia captain Bill Lawry, who spent decades alongside Greig in Nine's commentary box.

"World cricket's lost one of its greatest ambassadors."

Tributes flowed for Greig, who went from being a villain to a highly-respected cricket pundit in his adopted country.

"RIP Tony Greig!! You have left a great footprint on the world of cricket. My condolences to the Greig family," retired West Indies batting great Brian Lara said in a post on his Twitter account.

"Not only was he a wonderful player and a very successful player for England, I think he was a wonderful guy," Australia captain Michael Clarke told Australian television.

England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier said Greig had been "an extremely talented all-round cricketer and captain".

"He was a giant of a man who played a major role in the changing face of cricket during the 1970s," Collier said in a statement (Reporting by Ian Ransom and John Mehaffey; Editing by Peter Rutherford and Alison Wildey; peter.rutherford@thomsonreuters.com)

Costs For Marketing Mobile Apps Spiked Last Month Even As Downloads Temporarily Dropped

fiksu-costsAs app developers geared up for the super-competitive Christmas season, marketing costs rose by 30 percent in November from the month before, according to Fiksu, a Boston-based company that helps publishers find the most efficient marketing channels. The company said that the cost of getting a “loyal” user, or one that opens an app more than three times, rose to $1.38 from $1.06 in October. That reversed a four-month trend that saw marketing costs decline going into October’s launch of the iPhone 5. Fiksu said the average number of downloads for the top 200 free iPhone apps in the U.S. declined to 4.57 million per day in November, down from 5.4 million in October. This is a temporary decline following the annual bump that comes with the launch of a new Iphone. When consumers get new phones around the annual iPhone launch or Christmas, downloads spike temporarily as people try out new apps or download old favorites. ?We can expect costs and download volumes to climb through December, much like last year, as marketers spend heavily in preparation for the flood of new devices and rush of user activity and app discovery around Christmas,” said Fiksu’s CEO Micah Adler in a statement. Indeed, mobile analytics startup Flurry reported yesterday that app downloads spiked at 328 million on Christmas Day, a record high for a single day since Flurry started measuring app downloads. Downloads per hour peaked early at around 11 a.m. on the 25th, and remained high throughout the day until around 8:30 or 9 p.m. While Christmas represents a single-day peak, Flurry is projecting that app downloads will remain high throughout the next week and into New Year?s Day, ending the holiday period with over 1.5 billion downloads, and possibly reaching as high as 2 billion total. Meanwhile, Fiksu is backed by Charles River Ventures. They’ve accumulated more than 63 billion app actions including launches, registrations and in-app purchases, as well as real-time bidding requests in helping developers find the most optimized ways of getting new users.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama was preparing to present a limited fiscal proposal to congressional leaders at a White House meeting Friday, a make-or-break moment for negotiations to avoid across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts at the first of the year.

Lawmakers and White House officials held out a slim hope for a deal before the new year, but it remained unclear whether congressional passage of legislation palatable to both sides was even possible.

The Friday afternoon meeting among congressional leaders and the president ? their first since Nov. 16 ? was likely to center on which income thresholds would face higher tax rates, extending unemployment insurance, and preventing a cut in Medicare payments to doctors, among other issues.

For Obama, the eleventh-hour scramble represented a test of how he would balance strength derived from his re-election against an avowed commitment to compromise in the face of divided government. Despite early talk of a grand bargain between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that would reduce deficits by more than $2 trillion, the expectations were now far less ambitious.

Although there were no guarantees of a deal, Republicans and Democrats said privately that any agreement would likely include an extension of middle-class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes, an Obama priority that was central to his re-election campaign.

A key question was whether Obama would agree to abandon his insistence during the campaign on raising taxes on households earning more than $250,000 a year and instead accept a $400,000 threshold like the one he offered in negotiations with Boehner. Another was whether Republicans would seek a higher income threshold.

The deal would also likely put off the scheduled spending cuts. Such a year-end bill could also include an extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring, officials said.

If a deal was not possible, it would become evident at Friday's White House meeting, and Obama and the leaders would leave a resolution for the next Congress to address in January.

Such a delay could unnerve the stock market, which edged lower for a fifth day Friday amid worries that lawmakers would fail to reach a budget deal. Economists say that if the tax increases are allowed to hit most Americans and if the spending cuts aren't scaled back, the recovering but fragile economy could sustain a traumatizing shock.

Obama called for the meeting as top lawmakers on Thursday alternately cast blame on each other while portraying themselves as open to a reasonable last-minute bargain.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid all but conceded that any effort at this late date was a long shot. "I don't know timewise how it can happen now," he said.

The No. 2 Senate GOP leader, Jon Kyl of Arizona, said it is "pretty unlikely" that Senate Republicans would agree to legislation averting the fiscal cliff if it wouldn't pass muster in the House.

"If you know the House isn't going to do something, why go through the charade?" he told reporters. "That becomes political gamesmanship."

Obama and Reid, D-Nev., would have to propose a package that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would agree not to block with procedural steps that require 60 votes to overcome.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said he still thinks a deal could be struck.

The Democrat told NBC's "Today" show Friday that he believes the "odds are better than people think."

Schumer said he based his optimism on indications that McConnell has gotten "actively engaged" in the talks.

Appearing on the same show, Republican Sen. John Thune noted the meeting scheduled later Friday at the White House, saying "it's encouraging that people are talking."

But Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., predicted that "the worst-case scenario" could emerge from Friday's talks.

"We will kick the can down the road," he said on "CBS This Morning."

"We'll do some small deal and we'll create another fiscal cliff to deal with the fiscal cliff," he said. Corker complained that there has been "a total lack of courage, lack of leadership," in Washington.

If a deal were to pass the Senate, Boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner discussed the fiscal cliff with Republican members in a conference call Thursday and advised them that the House would convene Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, said Boehner told the lawmakers that "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."

But Cole did not rule out Republican support for some increase in tax rates, noting that Boehner had amassed about 200 Republican votes for a plan last week to raise rates on Americans earning $1 million or more. Boehner ultimately did not put the plan to a House floor vote in the face of opposition from Republican conservatives and a unified Democratic caucus.

"The ultimate question is whether the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are going to push us over the cliff by blocking plans to extend tax cuts for the middle class," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said. "Ironically, in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, they will be responsible for the largest tax increase in history."

Boehner, McConnell, Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are all scheduled to attend Friday's White House meeting with Obama. Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in the meeting, the White House said.

Translational Bioinformatics: PLOS Computational Biology presents ...

VN:F [1.9.21_1169]

PLOS Computational Biology is pleased to announce the launch of a new collection of Education articles: ??Translational Bioinformatics?. This collection is presented as an online ?book? which could serve as a reference tool for a graduate level introductory course, marking a step in an exciting new direction for the Education section of the journal.

Translational bioinformatics is an emerging field that addresses the current challenges of integrating increasingly voluminous amounts of molecular and clinical data. ?Its aim is to provide a better understanding of the molecular basis of disease, which in turn will inform clinical practice and ultimately improve human health. In the Introduction of the collection, Russ Altman highlights some of these challenges and the role of translational bioinformatics in resolving them, defining the field as ?the development and application of informatics methods that connect molecular entities to clinical entities?.

As can be seen just by looking at the content of this collection, the field of translational bioinformatics encompasses a wide range of topics including pharmacogenomics, medical genomics and human microbiome analysis. In each of the 14 chapters, leading experts in the field focus on one of these key topics, providing a solid introduction for those new to translational bioinformatics. Like all other PLOS articles, chapters in this open-access collection are freely available to everyone for reuse and redistribution, for example as course materials. Notably, the authors have created exercise questions for each chapter, which could be used by students or other interested readers to test what they?ve learned. Answers to these exercises can be found in the supporting information. This is just the start though, as translational bioinformatics is a rapidly growing area, and publishing this resource as a PLOS Computational Biology collection will enable us to develop the content as the field develops.

The idea to create a collection in the format of a book was first conceived when Maricel Kann, Guest Editor of the collection, approached the journal earlier this year. Since then, Maricel, along with our Education Editor Fran Lewitter, has spearheaded the project and their hard work has created the resource you see today. A PDF of the full collection has been created, which you can download here. This has been an exciting new project to work on and Phil Bourne, Founding Editor-in-Chief of PLOS Computational Biology, keenly anticipates its role in marking a change in the accessibility of educational materials:

?The era of writing those time-consuming chapters that typically form mini-reviews in an expensive, little read book, are?over. As PLOS Computational Biology publishes its first book in the form of an open-access collection, complete with exercises and answers, a new era begins: an era of wide distribution and access to important science for everyone.??Translational Bioinformatics??edited by Maricel Kann is a fitting beginning ? an important ?book? with excellent contributions from leading authors in a rapidly growing field. Thanks go to Maricel for her energy in pushing this, to Education Editor Fran Lewitter and?the?PLOS staff for making this happen, and to PLOS for continuing to push the envelope on making science accessible to all.?
