A notorious malware campaign that infected hundreds of computers in Japan and India has been linked back to a former graduate student at a Chinese university ? a rare instance in which a name and face is able to be attached to the dark underground world of Chinese hackers and state-sponsored cybercriminals.
Based on information presented by the security firm Trend Micro, the New York Times tied a string of online attacks aimed at Tibetan activists in Japan and India to Gu Kaiyuan, who attended Sichuan University in Chengdu, China. Gu, the Times said, is now an employee at Tencent, a leading Chinese Internet portal company.
Contacted at Tencent, Gu told the Times, "I have nothing to say."
In the Trend Micro report, "Inside an APT Campaign with Multiple Targets in India and Japan," researchers tracked the "Luckycat" campaign, which has been active for nearly a year and has compromised 233 computers in 90 separate malware attacks.
These attacks came to light recently when it was found that Mac malware targeting Tibetan protestors was being spread through rigged Microsoft Word and Office documents exploiting Java and Adobe vulnerabilities to open backdoors on targets computers. Once the Trojan took hold, it intercepted information and transmitted it back to remote command-and-control servers.
The Luckycat campaigns targets include the aerospace, military, energy, shipping and engineering industries, as well as Tibetan activists and organizations. Given its technical similarities, Luckycat is believe to be a continuation of ShadowNet, also known as GhostNet, a Chinese cybercrime campaign that has been targeting Tibetan activists as well as the Indian government since 2009, Trend Micro said.
Trend Micro connected the email address used to register one of the command-and-control servers to a hacker using the named "dang0102." Researchers found that "dang0102" ? he also went by "scuhkr," shorthand for Sichuan University hacker ? published posts in a well-known hacker forum, XFocus, and recruited two to four people to join a research project on at Sichuan University's Information Security Institute in 2005.
Using online records, the Times connected "scuhkr" to Gu, who studied at Sichuan University from 2003 to 2006.
Sichuan University receives government funding for its computer network defense research, the Times said, giving credence to the widespread reports that the Chinese government sponsors its hackers.

Recent research on gender and negotiation has moved away from simple comparisons of differences between men and women to more nuanced studies of the contexts in which gender issues become salient. Negotiation over salaries dominates this research with the consequence that gender stereotypes are primed to the detriment of women negotiators. In her talk, Dr. Kolb will expand this view to consider the organizational contexts within which a broader set of issues are negotiated to consider the positive contributions of women negotiators. Her research shows a new perspective where women negotiators actually do well for themselves at the same time as they do well for their organizations.
Dr. Kolb is the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership (Emerita) and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Center for Gender in Organizations at the Simmons School of Management. From 1991-1994, Kolb was Executive Director of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Program where she co-directs The Negotiations in the Workplace Project. During the 2011-12 academic year, Kolb is a Distinguished Visiting Professor for Women and Leadership at Lokey School of Business at Mills College.
Dr. Kolb has co-authored several books on how women can negotiate the conditions for their own success while contributing to the effectiveness of their organization. Concordia study looks at rates of risky behaviours for online and offline gamblers

Montreal -- With the click of a mouse or touch of a mobile phone screen in pyjamas or jeans gambling is now at our fingertips 24/7 with Internet play. With this increased access to gambling, are online gamblers more prone to risky behaviours than offline gamblers?
A new study published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, led by Sylvia Kairouz of Concordia University, has compared people who gamble offline only to people who also gamble online in an effort to answer this question. Her results show that alcohol and cannabis use are in fact associated with online users.
"There has been growing concern with the rise in online gambling and how this affects the health of our public," says Kairouz, professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. "The number of gambling sites around the globe have grown from about 15 in 1995 to 2,358 in 2010 and global Internet gambling revenues increased from $3 billion to $24 billion between 2000 and 2010."
Kairouz's study looked at sociodemographic profiles, game-play patterns and level of addictive behaviours in adults who gamble online and offline. They used data from the 2009 Quebec gambling survey (part of the project Portrait du jeu au Qubec: Prvalence, incidence et trajectoires sur quatre ans, subsidized by the Fonds qubcois de la recherche sur la socit et la culture), which aimed to describe gambling problems, patterns and associated substance use behaviours in the Quebec population. From this survey, a sampling of 8,456 offline-only gamblers and 111 offline/online gamblers was chosen for the research.
In gathering the samples, it was revealed that online gambling appears to still only be a marginal phenomenon in the Quebec population, with only 1.3 per cent reporting having gambled online in the 12 months preceding the survey.
For the study, the gamblers were asked to report their gambling frequency over the past year and to give the number of times they gambled weekly, monthly or yearly. They were also asked to report how much money and time they spent gambling on a typical occasion. Alcohol and cannabis use over the year was also measured.
"Our results show that online gamblers reported being involved in more types of gambling and they spent more money and time playing than those gambling offline only," says Kairouz. "The proportion of frequent and problematic drinkers and cannabis users was also much higher among the Internet players."
According to Kairouz, these findings suggest that online gambling emerges as one more risky behaviour among a panoply of other substance-related risky behaviours exhibited by this small group of individuals.
"We cannot determine, therefore, whether gambling on the Internet creates problems in and of itself, or whether those who already have addictive behaviours are more likely to be enticed to gamble on the Internet," says Kairouz. "We need to conduct more research looking at individual charactersitics, environmental conditions, the object of the addiction (poker, for example) and so on to help us understand whether this group is more at risk for gambling-related problems. The hope would be to ultimately find ways to identify who the people at risk are, why they are at risk and then try to develop preventive measures to reduce the possibility of excessive online gambling."

Computer forensics has become an important of litigation. Computers have become an important part of your lives. This does not exclude criminals who have the technical know how of hacking into computer network systems. Electronic evidence has played a role in court but obtaining can be difficult.
